What is a fair rental rate to charge a family member living in our home?
My husband鈥檚 30-year-old brother lives with us and has not been helping out financially or physically around the house. No housework, no rent and no contribution to groceries or toiletry items. He is a healthy capable man simply taking advantage.
As much as I would like for him to simply move out and have his own place... that is not an option right now. So, in the mean time, I would like to start charging rent.
The monthly mortgage payment on our home is $875 and with electric, gas, water and trash it comes to a monthly total of $1365.00. Help!!What is a fair rental rate for a family member?
Look in the classifieds for a comparable situation, take an average, and charge him the same thing you would a stranger.
If he complains he can't pay, explain to him you are willing to negotiate some of the payment in chores, but if not that he will have to leave.

at least 25% of his income, or show him the door.
I think $350.00 is very fair.
I would start at $455, if he is not helping out around the house kick in anohter $100 a month and if he is not pitching in for groceries add another 150 a month. Do not let this get out of hand, before doing all this ensure your husband supports this 150%.
Where else could he live for less than $500 a month. He has meals cooked for him I assume? Do you do his laundry? Utilities included, $500 a moth would be a deal!
you need to seriously talk to him and figure something out. The fact that he hasn't even offered anything should be of a concern. Talk to your husband about both talking to him. You can figure an amount later which really isn't important. The fact that he should be aware of the situation is more important, in my opinion. good luck.
damn ok, well thats not that bad, i'd say nothing more than 300-400 a month, do u have kids, **** he is 30, damn thats ******** rediculous, you need to get on top of him getting the ****** out of the house
What is the going rate for a one-bedroom apartment? Since he does no housework and uses your stuff, I'd tack on a few bucks onto the rent you find and charge that.
I would equally divide the $1365 by the number of adults living in the house. 3 people $455. If he doesn't agree take him to small claims court to have him evicted. Once he (and your husband) see that court document, he may move or pay up. Remember to draw up a lease even if it is month-to-month.
